I'm Still with the Band

For the past 6 months, a major source of sanity, craziness and major happiness has been La Boquita, the world music group I formed with Silvia, Paolo and Mauricio. I met Paolo & Mauricio through Daniel, the man who briefly invoked Fever but ultimately proved to be just a little too sick in the head himself. Despite our disastrous ending, I'm forever thankful to him, though, for getting me back on the stage, getting me back in the saddle of love, and getting me to be more open to all sorts of possibilities, musical and otherwise. When Daniel and I fell apart, Maurico & Paolo were literally right there, sitting just a few feet away in the audience, ready to scoop up the pieces. A week later, Silvia (who is Paolo's girlfriend) moved from Queretaro to Zihuatanejo. One day after that, the four of us performed together for the first time.

Why I Live in Zihua

I had just left my office downtown to head home for a few hours of work on the computer before my band and I went to Ixtapa for an audition. My cellphone alerted me to a text message from Sylvia. She was in full on work crisis mode and needed to vent. I quickly checked my email to make sure I didn't have any pressing matters to attend to and made a detour for Sylvia's apartment. 30 minutes later we were at The Pancake House ("The only pancake house in Zihuatanejo with a cocktail lounge!") working through our first round of bloody marys and coconut mango muffins.

I'm With the Band

Our name is "La Boquita" which means "Little Mouth"... you know, because I'm so quiet and demure. (2 photos)

Fiebre

The first song that Daniel and I sang together was "Fever". We sang it before we even had one conversation. I felt the song was extremely cheesy - beneath me even - but it was a song we both knew the words to (albeit in 2 languages) so we tried it. We sounded pretty darn good.

Por Fin, Poderosas

We first bought our domain names in August of 2006.... Over one year later, today, Grupo de las Poderosas is a fully legal, on the books business.

On the Rocks

After several weeks of rain, rain, rain, even my most hermityness was feeling claustrophobic. I was delighted when a friend suggested on Friday afternoon that we get together for gazpacho. I suggested him and his wife come over to my place and said "just bring yourselves and the cold soup; I've got a bottle of wine, vodka, and juices to imbibe in." Then I went and looked in the freezer and realized there was less than half a shot of vodka in the bottle. Ooops.

Where Everybody Nobody Knows My Name

...I still heart Zihua very much and know that, even if our relationship changes, this charming beachside town will always be one of my true loves. This affection was reaffirmed in a quick exchange earlier tonight. I ran some late night errands and stopped off at Pozole Alley to eat a plate of 14 peso sopes. Of the 5 restaurants on Pozole Alley, I always eat at the same one and am very much a regular. The waiters all know my special requests by heart and they can tell by whether I pull my headphones off or not whether I'm going to eat in or take the food para llevar.

Anatomy of a Compliment

I've mentioned before that the placement and pain caused by the tumor in my pelvic bone occasionally causes swelling that resembles tube socks stuffed into my pants. As any girl would feel, I am quite embarrassed and sensitive about this. As any girl who lives in the tropics where bathing suits are often worn more than real clothes would feel, I am quite mortified about this and obsess over it daily. So as I walked down the street and a group of 4 teenaged boys started saying, "Nice Penis! Nice Penis!" you can imagine how much I wished I could ... well, to put it nicely, Die. But I only wanted to die after I cut off all of their penises, hung them on a necklace, and taunted them by saying "Nice hole where your penis used to be! Nice hole where your penis used to be!" Yes, that's putting it nicely. The truly honest not-so-nice version involved fish hooks and matches.

Squeezed

I've never been a fan of orange juice. Never drank it, not straight up and not even with vodka. The only time I ever bought orange juice was every Thanksgiving to make my homemade cranberry sauce - and then I usually gave the rest of the carton away since it made no sense for it to go bad. Oh, and in full disclosure, I did once drink 6 mimosas on a Tuesday morning when Deborah threw a ladies' brunch at her restaurant. At the time, it felt silly and decadent and Bev and I decided to just live it up. At the time, I also had dengue (but didn't know it yet) so it might have been the delusion-inducing fever that made me drain my orange juice & champagne cocktails so quickly.

Weather Report

Roberto and I are sitting on a balcony (I must say "A" balcony because there are 3!) of my summer home. We're into the second bottle of wine, the third pipe, and the 5th Britney Spears song to pop up on his random rotation of music on his laptop. The air is so thick and humid and oppressive that we're wearing little more than our skivvies and we keep fetching ice to slip down our sarongs.
And then... a soft rumble.
